Interesting question. As a native Chinese, I often use both equivalently, without thinking their differences.
But most native Chinese still know that 橘 and 橙 are two different kinds of fruit. In English, 橘 is "mandarin" (with the first letter lower-cased. If you put it upper-case, "Mandarin" is the standard version of Chinese language), while "橙" is "orange". When it comes to taste, I think 橘 is a little more sweet, and 橙 is a little more sour.
I don't know if you can see any mandarin fruit in supermarkets around your vincinity (when I was in UK, I only saw mandarin syrup sealed in metal tins), but if you do, and compare it with an average orange fruit, I guess you can see the difference. Generally, mandarin color tends to be a little deeper, while orange a little brighter.
And, the name of 橘 could vary in different places in China. Say, in my hometown 福州 (Fuzhou), we have a fruit named 芦柑, which is basically another version of 橘. I attached a picture here, you can compare it with regular oranges.
But... to be honest, if we go too deep into this question, we could become a botanist. XD
